In September I was called to South Korea, which was not an unknown place to me. Since my first visit 4 years ago, things have changed here too. There are now street cafés, different sorts of bread and as the latest hit they are selling "pretzels", which beside the shape have very little in common with our bretzels. Women start wearing flat shoes and occasionally you can see a man with longer hair. The Koreans enjoy a relatively high standard of living but everything seems to be ruled by regulations which makes them forget that besides technical standards there should be room for quality of life, culture and pleasure. The architecture of the cities is rather dull and monotonous, which makes it very difficult to find one's way around since all looks the same, and it is difficult to find some green space. The current exchange rate is so favorable that it becomes a paradise for shoppers with the biggest outlets for electronically appliances, huge shopping malls and curious street markets. At first sight it is difficult to get in contact with the Koreans, but once the ice is broken they become very friendly.
My sculpture called "Balance" is contrary to all conventional skills available to a sculptor. The outside of the block of granite remains unchanged and only the inside of the stone is worked at. The twisted vacuum still staying in balance symbolizes the personal equilibrium which we all try to achieve in life.
